Better Business for All - Health & Safety

Do you have any regulatory concerns for your business?

Not sure what regulations your business needs to comply with?

Don't let Health & Safety legislation scare you as specialist advice and guidance is available to you and usually you will only need to carry out a few simple steps to make sure you comply.

This can save your business money by reducing the amount of time you might lose through accidents, ill health, damaged equipment and your reputation.

Most of the time all you need to do to is ask your local authority what you need to do and then do it!

Both your council and the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) are responsible for enforcing the Health & Safety Law.

Local authorities cover premises like: shops, hairdressers, cinemas, hotels, leisure activities, warehouses, tyre & exhaust centres, consumer services e.g. launderettes, churches, banks, beauty parlours, residential care homes etc.

The HSE cover premises like: factories, building sites, car repair, garages, workshops, printers, hospitals, dentists, doctors, schools, universities, dry cleaners, fair grounds, mines, quarries, farms, railways, chemicals etc.

HSE & IOSH (Institute of Occupational Safety & Health) have a lot of specialist advice and guidance on their website that you can access for free.

Some Health & Safety principles you will need to consider are:

  • Employers are responsible for their employees & customers

  • If you have more than 5 employees you will need a written Health & Safety policy

  • If you employ someone you will need employers liability insurance

  • You will need to display an approved Health & Safety poster in an obvious place

  • Risk assessments will need to be carried out and recorded

You need to make sure your business is fully compliant and that you get it right first time and save money!

Please contact the Business Support Helpline to give them your business postcode so they can signpost you to your local authority.

Don't forget they can also provide you with free, impartial advice for anything to do with your business! So have your questions ready for them!
